E necessaria una certa conoscenza della lingua inglese per studiare il materiale desame. Previo accordo con il docente, parte del materiale desame potrà essere sostituito con letture in francese o tedesco.
E necessaria una certa conoscenza della linguistica e delle strutture linguistiche, ed è fortemente consigliato l'aver sostenuto almeno un esame di ambito linguistico.English:

Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento ha per obiettivi l'introduzione alla complessità linguistica africana fornendo un inquadramento di base sulle lingue africane lungo i seguenti assi:
- linguistica storica e classificazione linguistica
- sociolinguistica

The classes will offer an introduction to the complexity of the African linguistic landscape. The African languages will be presented along the following three venues of research:
- historical linguistics and language classification
- sociolinguistics
- typology

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
AI termine dell'insegnamento lo studente dovrà dimostrare di avere acquisito le informazioni di base della linguistica africana nei suoi aspetti classificatori e in alcune delle principali caratteristiche fonologiche e morfosintatiche. Avranno inoltre acquisito il lessico tecnico della linguistica e saranno in grado di comprendere materiale scientifico in almeno una lingua internazionale.
At the end of the course students will have learned the basics of African linguistics in its classificatory aspects and in a selected number of phonological and morphosyntactic features. Furthermore, they will have a sound grasp of the technical lexicon of linguistics and will be able to understand and use scientific material in at least one international language.

L'esame orale sarà preceduto da un test scritto.
L'esame orale consisterà nella valutazione del test scritto e in una serie di domande relative al programma svolto a lezione.
Gli studenti non frequentanti sono pregati di contattare tempestivamente il docente e potranno concordare letture parzialmente sostitutive.
Il voto è espresso in trentesimi.
The learning outcomes will be tested through an oral exam preceded by a written test.
The oral exam will consist in the correction of the written test and a number of questions pertaining to the program.
Non-attending students are advised to contact the teacher at soonest; they will have the possibility to be examined on a partially different list of texts to be agreed upon with the teacher.
The final mark will be expressed in a range of 30 (thirty) points.

Il corso intende fornire un inquadramento di base sulle lingue africane, sviluppando in particolare i seguenti punti:
- classificazione delle lingue africane:
1. concetti di base di linguistica storia, sulle famiglie linguisiche e la classificazione linguistica.
famiglie linguistiche di Greenberg; lingue principali; ipotesi storiche.
2. lingue non Africane in Africa (europee, arabo, malgascio,…).
3. nuove lingue in Africa: definizione di pidgine creolo. Loro storia, caratteri e diffusione.
- sociolinguistica dell'Africa:
1. definizione di lingua, dialetto, lingua franca, lingua mista, codeswitching, bilinguismo, diglossia, ecc.
2. lingue nazionali e lingue ufficiali in Africa. Ortografie. Problemi della standardizzazione.
- tipologia e caratteri tipici delle lingue africane:
1. classi nominali
2. genere e numero
3. ideofoni
4. marcatura del topic e focus.
5. alcune caratteristiche fonologiche.
Aim of the classes is to provide the student with a background on African languages, with a special attention on the following topics:
- classification of African languages:
1. basic concepts in historical linguistics, language families and language classification.
Greenbergian language families, main languages. Historical hypotheses.
2. non-African languages in Africa (European, Arabic, Malagasy,…)
3. new languages in Africa: definitions of pidgin, creoles. Their history, features and spread.
- sociolinguistics of Africa:
1. definition of language, dialect, lingua franca, mixed language, codeswitching, bilingualism, diglossia, etc.
2. national and official languages in Africa. Orthograhies. Problems of standardization.
- typology and features of African languages:
1. noun classes
2. gender and number
3. ideophones
4. topic and focus marking
5. selected phonological features.
